NANAIMO — It’s not officially the holiday season until the familiar sound of kettle bells ring.

The Nanaimo Salvation Army’s kettle campaign began on Friday, Nov. 20 is will continue through to Christmas.

Organizers are hopeful to raise $280,000 during this year’s campaign, an ambitious goal given a reduction in volunteers and kettle locations.

“We have had one or two (businesses) that because of the social distancing that we aren’t able to be at that location,” Dawne Anderson, organizer for the Salvation Army, said.

Fifteen kettles rolled out through Nanaimo on Friday with another handful to be added Dec. 1. To staff them during all hours, the Salvation Army needs to fill over 7,000 volunteer hours.

New this year are tap debit/credit machines beginning Dec. 1 where a $5 contactless donation can be made. Multiple taps are supported up to $50.

The money raised in Nanaimo stays in the community and goes to fund programs operated by the Salvation Army year-round.

Included are their shelter in downtown Nanaimo and their meal program.

“At Christmas time we’ve certainly seen a massive increase in our meal program with the lunches and suppers,” Anderson said. “For the whole year…approximately 120,000 free meals that we’ll have given out throughout the year.”

Donations to this year’s kettle campaign can be made through the Salvation Army website, or by contacting the Nanaimo branch at 250 753 8834.
