NANAIMO — Island Health has seen its first increase in total COVID-19 cases in almost a week.

Three additional positive tests were confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 28, bringing the health authority’s tally to 253. Nine are considered active with three in each of the north, central and south regions.

According to Island Health, the six most recently confirmed and contact-traced cases from Oct 18 to Oct. 24 were from community exposures and unrelated to an existing confirmed case or cluster.

Three were from exposure within Island Health, the remainder stemmed from domestic travel.

Throughout B.C., 287 cases were discovered Wednesday with 2,316 currently active. The number of hospitalizations increased to 87 with the number of people in intensive care decreasing slightly to 25.

In a joint statement, the province further clarified its amended health order around gatherings at home.

On Monday, Dr. Bonnie Henry said gatherings in a private home must be limited to those living at the home plus no more than six people.

“The new order is about ensuring what happens in our homes is in step with what we are doing elsewhere,” the statement read. “The things we do at parties and celebrations including talking, hugging and eating and drinking together indoors are much riskier than our normal school or work activities.”

The amended order came as B.C. posted multiple record high case counts last week and over the weekend, however Island Health has remained largely unaffected.
