Overnight fire causes extensive damage to downtown Nanaimo gas station

NANAIMO — No injuries but significant damage to the market portion of the Husky gas station on Terminal Ave. early Tuesday morning.

Onlookers spotted flames inside the station’s main building after Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews responded to activated smoke alarms just after 3 a.m.

Acting deputy chief of operations Chris Whiting told NanaimoNewsNOW crews arrived to heavy fire at the rear of the building and dense smoke inside.

“There were crews deployed from four stations, 16 personnel on scene. (Fire at a gas station) certainly does add another element, fortunately the fire was contained to the building itself and it wasn’t near the pumps.”

Crews were on scene for around two hours fighting the blaze and cleaning up.

Fire inspectors attended the scene Tuesday morning to determine the cause, although it is not considered suspicious.

“There’s a significant amount of fire damage to the exterior back wall of the building, also extensive smoke and water damage to the interior of the building due to the sprinkler system activating.”

No-one was at the station at the time of the fire.
