NANAIMO — The Island Health region has once again avoided new COVID-19 cases after a steady climb in recent weeks.

A statement on Wednesday, Sept. 23 confirmed 91 new cases across the province with none in Island Health.

It marks the second straight day of no confirmed new coronavirus cases in the Island Health zone after seven new cases were reported over the previous three days.

“There are 1,376 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, 3,368 people who are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases and 6,769 people who tested positive have recovered,” the statement said.

There are 89 fewer active COVID-19 cases in B.C. on Wednesday compared to the day before. Just eight active cases are present in the Island Health region.

Currently, 62 people are in hospital from the virus, 18 of which are receiving intensive care.

No new COVID-19 related fatalities were announced.

Of the nearly 6,800 COVID-19 cases detected throughout the province only 203 have occurred within the Island Health region.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau outlined concerns about the trajectory of the virus late Wednesday, stating a second wave of the virus is underway in four provinces.

New federal modelling data showed daily new COVID-19 cases have shot up to 1,000 across Canada compared to roughly 300 in late June.
