Man in custody after allegedly trying to run over Nanaimo Mountie

NANAIMO — Tips from the public were “instrumental” in arresting a man who refused to pull over for police in south Nanaimo.

RCMP staff sgt. John Blaise said the incident started Wednesday morning when a man driving a suspicious vehicle wasn’t willing to stop for police in the Old Victoria Rd. – View St. area.

Blaise said an officer pulled behind the suspect vehicle on a dead-end road.

“(The suspect) put the vehicle in reverse and tried to run over our member.”

The man allegedly escaped after backing onto private property. However, he didn’t get far as several witnesses were assisting police.

“Our members scanned the area to look for him and that’s when we ended up getting other pedestrians pointing us in the direction in which this individual fled, eventually leading us to central Nanaimo.”

More than one dozen Nanaimo RCMP cruisers were seen rushing to the area around the Northfield Rd. and Nanaimo Parkway intersection.

Blaise said the suspect ran from the vehicle in the area and was arrested shortly after.

He was sent to hospital and remains in police custody.
