Reuse Rendezvous taking steps towards a zero-waste Nanaimo

NANAIMO — For over two decades, local residents have helped give countless items a new lease on life.

The city’s popular annual Reuse Rendezvous is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9 across Nanaimo. It provides people the opportunity to put out unwanted but useable household items on the curb for others to collect.

Kirsten Gellein, city zero waste coordinator, told NanaimoNewsNOW they’re comfortable going ahead with the event amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s quite a low-risk event when we look at the BC CDC guidelines, as long as people follow precautions,” Gellein said.

Safeguards include regular hand sanitizing and physical distancing from other bargain hunters.

Items like toys, furniture, sporting goods, bikes and other hobby goods are typically the most popular according to Gellein.

“It does reinforce zero waste principals of reduction and reuse and it’s a really fun and accessible way for Nanaimo residents to redistribute those household goods.”

Gellein asks those participating to respect others and take only what they can use.

The COVID-19 pandemic did force the cancellation of the annual trunk sale at the Country Club Centre parking lot.
