NANAIMO — Families looking to wind their way through the gorgeous mid-island now have more opportunities.

A 2.3 kilometre multi-use trail within Englishman River Falls Provincial Park officially opened on Thursday, June 18.

It’s the brainchild of BC Parks employee Kirby Villeneuve, who told NanaimoNewsNOW family-friendly trails aren’t nearly as common as they could be.

“What’s missing is green terrain, the family-friendly, easier stuff to learn on,” he said. “We had the terrain for it, the good location and we thought we’d fill that niche at Englishman River Provincial Park.”

The new trail is adjacent to the much larger network of more difficult routes known as Hammerfest.

Villeneuve said being so close to the tougher rides means young cyclists will have the chance to easily advance into wilder rides once they’ve gained the skills.

After six years, he said it’s bittersweet to see the hard work creating the trail come to an end.

“Some of my favourite stuff is getting out and laying trails. Now that it’s all done, I guess I’ll be looking for the next opportunity to do this, which are few and far between.”

The trail will be maintained for at least the next 10 years by the Arrowsmith Cycling Club.
