Vancouver Island again escapes new COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — Two full days of data yielded no new diagnosed COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry made the announcement during her Monday, May 11 briefing, which revealed the number of hospitalizations in the Island Health region from the virus dropped from two to one.

Province-wide Dr. Henry said 66 people are in hospital in the province, a reduction from 69 during her update on Saturday, May 9.

She announced 23 new cases over the past two days, but said no new community based outbreaks popped up.

“We must remember all of the important things that we still all of us need to do and that’s including keeping that safe distance between us everywhere,” Henry said.

One new COVID-19 -elated death was announced for a provincial total of 130.

Dr. Henry said she “fully expects” next week the province will begin phase two of its plan to ease various COVID-19 restrictions.

“We need to strike that right balance between the easing of restrictions to make sure that our forward approach is safe, practical and sustainable.”

125 people in total have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the Island Health region since March 11.

The last COVID-19 cases on the island were announced on Thursday, May 7 when two confirmed cases were revealed.
