NANAIMO — An alert home owner likely thwarted a break and enter on their Cedar property.

He alerted Nanaimo RCMP around 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 26 after noticing the lock on his barn was broken. Moments later, a horn sounded from his driveway and the home owner saw two men running from his property and a woman inside a car.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the home owner grabbed his phone to get a key photo.

“He did a great job, he didn’t intervene directly but he noted where the two suspects were running off to. With his phone, he used it appropriately to get a picture of her and the license plate number which is exactly what we’re looking for.”

The photo led police to the home of the vehicle’s registered owner.

A 36-year-old man who is well known to police was arrested then later released ahead of a court date on July 7.

Police dog services searched the surrounding area of the Cedar property and recovered key evidence.

“The perfect use of police dog services because it is a rural area and the track was not interrupted,” O’Brien said. “We believe they left in an unidentified vehicle which is probably why the track stopped.

Police said they’re confident on identifying the female driver and the other man seen running from the property.
