COVID-19 wreaking havoc on Canada’s hospitality industry, MPs told
OTTAWA — The House of Commons finance committee is hearing stark details about the carnage the COVID-19 pandemic is causing for restaurants and hotels in Canada.
Restaurant operator Andrew Oliver says 10 per cent of restaurants across the country had already permanently closed as of the end of March.
And he says a survey conducted by Restaurants Canada found another 18 per cent expect to close their doors for good by the end of this month.
Oliver says 50 per cent of independent restaurants don’t expect to survive the health crisis, which has closed most restaurants, except those offering takeout and delivery.
