Oceanside RCMP unveils online crime reporting platform

PARKSVILLE — Non-urgent and less serious Parksville-Qualicum area crimes can now be reported with the click of a button.

Oceanside RCMP announced the launch of its online crime reporting website, designed to log reports of local crimes which may not require immediate police attention.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman said the new platform covers things like crimes with no witnesses or suspects, and lost or stolen valuables under $5,000.

“Maybe they don’t feel like talking to someone or they don’t think their case is significant enough to call in, but they could easily report it online. We then have those statistics and we know where to put our resources.”

Foreman said all reported crimes and lost items made through the new website will be reviewed by civilian employees.

“If it’s unnecessary for a regular member of the RCMP to get involved with it they won’t have to,” Foreman said. “They can maybe be a little more proactive or do things that are more significant.”

Foreman said the new platform will help their detachment prioritize reported crimes in a more logical order.

The Oceanside online crime reporting site can be accessed online.

Nanaimo RCMP launched online crime reporting last year after several other B.C. detachments took part in a pilot project.
