Clippers weekend wrap Jan. 24-25

NANAIMO – With ten games left in the BCHL season, earning second place in the Island Division is looking like more of a reality for the Nanaimo Clippers.

The team is nine points back of the Cowichan Valley in the standings after a weekend split with the Langley Rivermen and Cowichan Valley Capitals.

In their game against the Rivermen, the Clippers got out to leads of 2-0 and 3-2 on the strength of three goals from Liam Ryan.

Langley sent the game to overtime but Steven Agriogianis played hero with a wrist shot to the glove side early in OT to make the final score 4-3 for Nanaimo.

On Jan. 25 Nanaimo went down 0-4 in Cowichan before Agriogianis got the Clippers back into the game in the third period.

He had two goals to cut the gap to 4-2 but the Capitals held on for the win.

The game ended with a flurry of penalties in the last 17 seconds. A total of 19 infractions were handed out between the two teams and four Clippers were suspended.

Trevor LeDonne and Tim Washe each received three games for a gross misconduct, Brandon Dent got two games for a blow to the head major,and Devon Mussio was handed a one game ban for being involved in a second fight during a stoppage.

Clippers highlights versus Langley and Cowichan Valley Jan. 25-26

Nanaimo has home games coming up to end the month.

They host West Kelowna on Jan. 29 and Alberni Valley on Jan. 31.

The Clippers final month of the season includes a pair of games against the Capitals and Bulldogs with single dates versus Powell River, Vernon, Surrey and Chilliwack.

CLIP NOTES:

Robby Drazner became the tenth Clipper to commit to an NCAA Division 1 school. He will attend Miami University in Ohio next year.

Steven Agriogianis is on a tear with three goals in his last two games and six points in his last five appearances.

The Clippers Jan. 31 home game against Alberni Vally is alumni night. Upwards of 60 alumni from all eras of Clippers hockey will be in attendance.
