NANAIMO — Local mounties are on the search for a man with short-term memory problems who failed to return to his supportive care home on Monday, Dec. 9.

57-year-old Robert Gillies was last seen at a coffee shop in Departure Bay around 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning. He’s described at 5’10, medium build, blonde hair and walks with a noticable limp.

Gillies suffers from short-term memory issues and is new to the Nanaimo area.

“This is a first for him so we’re very concerned,” Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We had Nanaimo Search and Rescue out last night, they didn’t locate him but they were simply checking some green spaces. They are not involved in the search today.”

RCMP believe Gillies may have headed to another area of Nanaimo or a neighbouring community.

“He’s known to take public transit, so we’ve alerted various jurisdictions from Ladysmith to Parksville,” O’Brien said.

Gillies is not considered dangerous in any way and RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating him and reporting that information to police.
