A man is dead after being shot by a Nanaimo RCMP officer.

Nanaimo Mounties say they responded to a report of a man with a knife in the area of Norwell Drive and the Island Highway at 10:20 Tuesday morning.

The man was found on Country Club Drive. After what police call an “encounter” with the man, shots were fired. The man was taken to hospital and died from his injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office has deployed investigators. The IIO investigates all officer-involved incidents that result in death of serious harm.

Police tape can be seen on Country Club Drive, near Wassel Way, on the other side of the parking lot of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Brent Frain lives nearby and spoke to reporter Ian Holmes at the scene.

“I was sitting watching TV and I heard a couple big, sounded like gunshots and I was like wow, jumped out of my seat. Next thing I know, I see a bunch of cop cars come flying up the road,” said Frain.

“I saw a bunch of cop cars, ambulances, firetrucks, it almost seemed like some kind of movie set going on at first, and then I realized this is real life. When it comes that close to home, you become really concerned.”

The IIO says no further information or updates will be provided at this time. They will be gathering evidence at the scene, interviewing witnesses and the officers involved.
