UPDATE: WorkSafeBC takes over investigation into fatal accident in Parksville

PARKSVILLE —WorkSafeBC is now leading the investigation into the death of a man in a workplace accident in Parksville Thursday.

Oceanside RCMP confirm a 31 year old Nanoose Bay man is dead, while his colleague, a 30 year old man, was airlifted to hospital in Victoria in stable condition. The incident happened around 1 p.m. while the men were working on a ladder at the Pacific Manor on Moilliet St.

WorkSafe’s Trish Knight Chernecki says four of their investigators are on scene.

“WorkSafeBC investigates incidents to determine their cause and to ensure compliance with the Workers Compensation Act. The findings of the investigation may result in orders or administrative penalties,” she said.

Knight Chernecki says preliminary information is the men were working for Wilson Exteriors, based in Coombs.

She says it could be a month before a report on the incident is finished.

The Coroners Service is investigating an “apparent fatal workplace accident” in Parksville Thursday.

Coroner Barb McLintock confirmed via email they were called to the incident in Parksville, but few details are available at this point.

WorkSafeBC’s Trish Knight Chernecki tells NanaimoNewsNOW they received a call around 1:20 p.m. Thursday from Oceanside RCMP informing them about an incident. She said two investigators are looking into what happened at the Pacific Manor at 169 Moilliet St.

Knight Chernecki said two workers that were up a ladder were injured, but wouldn’t share any more information.

Oceanside RCMP have yet to respond to requests for comment.
