Local department celebrates 60 years of firefighting
NANAIMO — The North Oyster Volunteer Fire Department (NOVFD) itself hasn’t changed much in six decades, but how the department functions sure has.
The NOVFD celebrates its 60th birthday Saturday, Sept. 9.
Chief Jason Laymon said the department was originally born in 1957 and moved to their current Yellow Point Rd. home 10-years later.
Laymon, a 25-year department veteran, told NanaimoNewsNOW the growing community at the time realized a proper firefighting service was necessary.
