Nanaimo referendum info: how and where to vote

Mar 6, 2017 | 8:40 AM

NANAIMO — Numerous questions have swirled around the merits of Nanaimo’s proposed events centre, but there’s no ambiguity about where or how residents can have their voices heard.

On March 11, voting locations are scattered across the city, primarily at schools and community centres, and you can vote at any spot. Gurrie said they have one more location than they did in the 2014 election.

At the polling stations, you’ll be asked to check in using the provincial voter list. If you’re on the list, you don’t need to bring ID, but by checking in you won’t be able to vote at any other spot to prevent voter fraud.

If you aren’t on the list, you’re asked to bring two pieces of ID. They don’t have to have your photo, but one has to have your signature and the other has to have your address.

If you can provide only one piece of valid ID, the option to sign a declaration about your identity is available and can be used as the second piece of ID.

Polls are open 8 a.m to 8 p.m. on March 11, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Protection Island.
