Spike belts used to end car chase from Parksville to Lantzville

Dec 11, 2018 | 3:27 PM

NANAIMO — A car chase from Parksville to Lantzville ended in dramatic fashion after spike belts were rolled out.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said they had to be used after a woman in her late 30’s entered the Parksville Co-op Gas Bar Tuesday afternoon and “indicated to employees she was being held hostage and feared for her life.”

The woman sped away southbound on Highway 19 with Oceanside RCMP and Mid-Island Traffic Services officers in pursuit.

RCMP tried to stop her on the highway, but were unable even with two spike belts.

“She went over both spike belts, all four tires were destroyed,” O’Brien said.

Nanaimo RCMP officers positioned at Ware Rd. and Highway 19 managed to apprehend the woman.

“We determined there were mental health issues at play, there were no other people in the vehicle and she was not at risk,” O’Brien said.

The woman was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for assessment.

The scene was cleared shortly before 4 p.m. Traffic was minimally impacted.
