‘Absolutely despicable:’ poppy donation cans stolen from multiple Nanaimo businesses

NANAIMO — It’s a story that sadly rears its ugly head every year at this time — poppy donation cans being stolen.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said at least six poppy cans were stolen in the last week from a variety of north end businesses.

The stores hit include McDonald’s, Tim Hortons and Pomme Natural Market, all of which are in the area around Woodgrove Centre.

O’Brien said it’s very likely one or two people are responsible for all the thefts.

“Most people recognize the significance of these and even criminals will shy away from stealing poppy donations. We’re not happy with this, it’s absolutely despicable to steal money raised from poppies considering what they represent to everyone at this time of year.”

He said while police have little to go on at this point, they’re hoping the public and video surveillance can help them hone in on a suspect.

“If they start in the north end, they’ll probably start working their way through the rest of Nanaimo and we have to put a stop to it.”

O’Brien said it’s important for businesses to ensure poppy donation cans are properly secured and in highly visible areas to deter thieves.
