Quick response limits fire damage in Nanaimo RV park

NANAIMO — No injuries and minimal damage after a fire in a north-Nanaimo RV park Thursday evening.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews responded just before 5 p.m. to a fire on Canna Crescent, inside the Jingle Pot RV Park, near the Parkway and Mostar Road intersection.

By 6 p.m. the fire was in mop-up mode and crews were rolling up their hoses.

While the official word from NFR is no one was hurt and the fire is under investigation, neighbours say it started when a woman tidying up in front of her unit put some papers in a fire pit.

Residents said things got out of hand quickly from there after some nearby cardboard caught fire and spread to a shed.

Smoke from the fire was clearly visible from the Parkway and there were reports the flames were touching a tree. Debris from the blaze, a piece of burnt paper, blew as far away as Avonlea Drive, behind the RV park.

A resident handing out water to a group of people watching firefighters work said the real story was how quickly crews responded and got things under control.

He says if not for that, the situation could have been much more serious.
