Local voter turnout expected to suffer with looming provincial vote
NANAIMO — Real Estate is becoming scarse, both on street corners for candidate signage, and in the minds of voters bracing for back-to-back elections next month.
Voters will go to the polls on consecutive Saturday’s in October, voting for new municipal and regional representation on Oct. 17, then being asked to elect a new provincial government on Oct. 24.
It’s a situation with little historical precedent, according to Vancouver Island University Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership Dr. Michael MacKenzie.
“Historically, governments that have the power to call elections, like our governments do, have tried not to do this, and so this is what makes it remarkable. It’s in some ways a violation of this widely held principle, which is that you try not to interfere with elections at other levels of government.”
