NANAIMO — A pair of medical offices planned to be built near the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is headed to the public hearing stage.

A rezoning application was presented for four lots along Seafield Cres. and one lot on Dufferin Cres. south of the NRGH main entrance, to build “medical office buildings” with “sufficient ceiling heights for medical equipment,” according to a report for City Council at the Monday, Sept. 21, meeting.

First and second readings to rezone the properties from Three and Four Unit Residential (R5) to Hospital Urban Centre (CC5) were approved unanimously to combine the five lots into two, with one medical building located on each, with an allowed height of six to eight stories, depending on the building’s composition.

The exact nature of the proposed medical offices wasn’t made clear in the report.

Council also approved a motion to hold a public hearing on the proposed zoning changes at a future meeting and to discharge a covenant requiring a stormwater management plan to be in place.

Covenants to complete off-site sanitary improvement work along Seafield Cres. will be secured, along with statutory right-of-ways for “full road cross-sections and a mid-block pedestrian connection.”

Affected properties within 100 metres of the site will be notified of the public hearing, with public signage made available on–site at least 10 days before the public hearing.

A public information meeting was held by the applicant on Dec. 16, 2025, where around a half-dozen members of the public attended.

While no concerns were raised about the project itself during the meeting, concerns about increased traffic and the importance of nearby Beaufort Park were discussed.
