The peloton, joined on the road by support vehicles, will make its way along Hwy. 19A through Union Bay, Qualicum Beach, and ending their day in Parksville.

On Friday and over the weekend, the group heads west to Port Alberni, Tofino, and Ucluelet before returning to Nanaimo on Monday, Sept. 28.

Waltman said the body hurts, but the entire group gets re-energized when entering communities, with the school visits so far a particular highlight.

“You’re riding down a hill, and even before you’re turning into the parking lot of a school, you just hear this clapping, this screaming, and this yelling, and it really makes you feel, regardless of how tired you are or how sore your bottom is, it takes your mind completely off of it, and all you want to do is hop off your bike and high five these kids.”

This year’s Tour de Rock is looking to raise $1 million for the Canadian Cancer Society, and Camp Goodtimes, which provides an authentic camp experience for kids battling illness and their families.

Riders are scheduled to complete their ride on Oct. 2 in Victoria.
