UPDATE: Nanaimo woman killed after being hit by fuel truck in downtown

NANAIMO — Mounties confirm one person was killed in an early morning motor vehicle incident in the city’s downtown.

Nanaimo RCMP were called to the Mid-Island Co-op gas bar at 60 Victoria Cres. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at around 6:45 a.m., after a 42-year-old woman was hit by a fuel truck.

BC RCMP E Division media relations officer staff sgt. Kris Clark told NanaimoNewsNOW the woman was pronounced deceased on scene.

“Investigation determined that a loaded gas tanker was backing into the parking lot and the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was seated or laying near the curb between the sidewalk and the parking lot at the entrance to the property.”

Police initially reported a man was deceased before stating it was a female who was in fact the victim.

Sgt. Clark said at this point, police are viewing the incident as accidental and that criminality is unlikely.

“Based on the circumstances this is a tragic incident and our investigation is now essentially transitioning to support the BC Coroners Service and their concurrent investigation.”

NanaimoNewsNOW confirmed the woman was a Nanaimo resident, and police are working to notify her next of kin.

An investigation into how the incident occurred remains ongoing.

Any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police are asked to do so.

“If anybody did see this incident, or has dashcam footage, please reach out to Nanaimo RCMP,” sgt. Clark said.
