Nanaimo and Comox land trust’s raising money to buy over 100 acres in Deep Bay

NANAIMO — A pair of mid-Island non-profits are teaming up to help raise enough money to protect 122.5 acres of forests, wetlands, estuaries, and shoreline in Deep Bay.
The BC Parks Foundation secured an agreement to buy the property west of Deep Bay, north of Qualicum Beach, for $4M, with donors already raising the vast majority, and now they’re asking the community to help them achieve their fundraising goal.
Executive director of the Comox Valley Land Trust (CVLT) Tim Ennis said both they and the Nanaimo & Area Land Trust committed $50,000 each, with $395,000 still remaining.
“It’s a really important piece of private land in the context of conservation in our region. It supports several thousand acres of upland protected area and links it to the coastline in an estuary environment, which is really quite a special opportunity. The property itself is, besides having creeks and streams and riparian areas in it, has beautiful mature forests and, of course, the estuary shoreline all together on one parcel, which is fantastic.”
