Two-time Stanley Cup winner joins Nanaimo Clippers’ ownership group

The Clippers describe Tkachenko’s involvement in the agreement as “a lead investor in the ownership group.”

Tverdosvsky played 713 games in the National Hockey League, winning two Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes.

“Winning at the highest level teaches you what a successful team is built upon — commitment, culture, and development of your people,” Tverdovsky said. “I’m excited to bring my experience as a player to the Clippers and help build something the players, staff, and this community can be proud of.”

While Kwong remains managing partner for the team, two previous parts of the ownership group have left, namely Joe Carrabino and Brett Barakett.

Also staying is head coach and general manager Colin Birkas, who signed a new multi-year contract this past off-season.

He’ll be joined by returning assistant coach Gaelan Patterson, who spent last year with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.

“This is a group that combines hockey excellence, real business depth with local roots,” Kwong added. “Colin’s extension gives us stability behind the bench. Gaelan’s return strengthens our coaching staff.”

The Nanaimo Clippers are coming off a BCHL Finals appearance where they fell in a nail-biting series to the Brooks Bandits.

A new video wall continues to be installed at Frank Crane Arena, and is expected to be operational ahead of the team’s season opener on Sept. 18.
