NANAIMO — Local skywatchers are hoping the clouds part just in time for a rare lunar eclipse.
A deep partial lunar eclipse is due Thursday, Aug. 27, during the late evening hours, with upwards of 96 per cent of the moon’s surface covered by Earth’s shadow.
Vancouver Island University astronomy professor Dr. Gregory Arkos said the best viewing will come after dinner as the moon comes into view.
“It’s not a complete, total lunar eclipse, but you should be able to see some of that red moon that we kind of see during a total lunar eclipse. This will be happening right at moonrise, so around 8 p.m. our time, if you look in the east and watch the moon come up, it should be already deep into eclipse.”
