Heat warning issued for Nanaimo & Oceanside

NANAIMO — A couple of scorching summer days, accompanied by balmy nights, are on the way for the mid-Island.

Environment Canada issued a yellow warning for heat on Tuesday, July 21, with forecasted daily highs expected to exceed 30 degrees on both Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22, in Nanaimo and Parksville.

“A ridge of high pressure is bringing high temperatures to the region,” the notice reads. “Daytime highs are expected to be in the low 30s with overnight lows in the mid-teens. High temperatures will persist through Wednesday, followed by a gradual cooling trend.”

While overnight lows are expected to remain elevated for this time of year until the weekend, daytime highs will moderate into the low to mid 20s.

Environment Canada is advising the heat, albeit brief, can still take its toll on individuals unable to escape the temperatures or those particularly susceptible.

“Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, and people with limited mobility.”

The heat will be compounded by some increased air quality issues, with wildfire smoke and haze remaining a factor for several days.

Environment Canada is forecasting a “moderate risk” Tuesday and a “low risk” on Wednesday for those sensitive to changes in air quality.
