Expanded Nanaimo night market returns

NANAIMO — Representing a top Harbour City summer tradition, the Commercial Street Night Market is back.

Organized by the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce weekly from June 18 to Aug. 27 on a vehicle-free Commercial St. between Terminal Ave. to just north of the Bastion St. intersection draws thousands of people Thursday nights.

Chamber interim CEO Liette Masse said the market has grown to 135 vendors, offering a range of unique products and services, as well as 15 weekly food trucks.

A waiting list of 50 vendors is on call to fill-in if space materializes during a given week for the event running between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

“We’ve had a lot of vendors that are reaching out still wanting to try to be apart of it which is honestly a really good problem to have; we hope that we can accommodate the best that we can, but really there are just only so many spots,” Masse told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Commitments from vendors was so strong, the application process was cut-off early, Masse said.

A majority of the vendors will be lined up along Commercial St., while Diana Krall Plaza is designated for food trucks, community vendors, and an expanded kids zone, among other attractions.

With last summer’s market disrupted by ongoing construction to overhaul Commercial St., Masse said having the event-ready street obstruction-free this time around will be greatly appreciated.

“Absolutely, that will definitely make for an easier setup and takedown from all aspects, that is for sure.”

Various forms of entertainment are also included in the Commercial Street Night Market experience.

Many storefront businesses remain open during market nights to take advantage of the thousands of attendees.

A few new additions are on the itinerary for this year’s family-friendly night market.

Masse thanked the City of Nanaimo for a downtown revitalization program grant to assist the Chamber in staging the weekly market.

More information on the Commercial Street Night Market can be found here.

Rinny Rose, the Chamber’s marketing and events coordinator, said a Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society exhibit at Diana Krall Plaza called Around the World makes its market debut.

“It’s for cultures from around the world who call Nanaimo home to showcase their culture in forms of dance, story-telling and food,” Rose said.

She noted Pacific Arts Market is hosting an arts zone in the revamped Soundworks building at 1 Commercial St.

“Artists will come and present their art work during the night market. It could be a great fit to check out when you’re done experiencing the market.”

The popular night market debuted in 2018 and has been held annually with the exception of pandemic era closures in 2020 and 2021.
