Nanaimo Rowing Club invites community to Come and Try Rowing

Jun 12, 2026 | 4:06 PM

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Rowing Club wants to see more people involved in the sport, so they’re hosting an event called Come and Try Rowing.

It’s slated for Saturday, June 13 at Long Lake from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Coach Richard Parr hopes to see as many as 20 to 30 newcomers at the event.

“Anyone at all ages, at any fitness level, anyone who’s interested in our sport should come down and see what we’re all about. It’s aimed at people who have maybe seen us row up and down the lake and thought maybe I want to give that a try.”

Those attending should allow an hour to an hour and a half to get the full experience.

Parr said they’ll go out in foursomes with one experienced rower and three novices together.

It’s in a bid to ensure the more experienced rower can keep everyone balanced and safe.

“One of the things we’d like our city to understand is we’re the only rowing club for a lot of miles away. We’d really like to see our community rowing. Whether that’s taking it really seriously, rowing twice a week with friends and going for coffee after, rowing can be whatever you want it to be.”

The Nanaimo Rowing Club has three programs set up for first-timers who want to learn more about the sport.

“A Masters Learn to Row for adults and two kinds of kids camps this summer,” Parr said. “One is a kids’ summer camp that focuses on rowing. For the first time we’re running a racing camp for kids. You don’t need experience, you just need to have athletic aspirations.”

After three regattas in the spring the high-performance athletes at the club have performed very well.

Seventeen medals have returned to the Nanaimo Rowing Club since the start of the season.

“The highest finisher was Laura McKenzie with two golds and a silver. Our surprise rower of the year is Aimee Majercin who has ten of those medals. She’s a 14-year-old who’s done extremely well and trains extremely hard.”

Majercin, James Morrill, and coach Nolan Messer will be representing the NRC at the upcoming BC Summer Games in July.

They’ll be a part of a regional Vancouver Island team participating in the Games from July 22-26 in Kelowna.
