Cheers as World Cup party begins, jeers as lightning forces Toronto fans to evacuate
The biggest FIFA World Cup in history officially kicked off Thursday, as the Canadian host cities prepared for matches, cultural events, an influx of fans and the international spotlight.
Thousands of delirious Mexico supporters rejoiced at the official FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park in Vancouver, as their team racked up the first goals and first win on the tournament, beating South Africa 2-0.
But the weather put a dampener on the party in Toronto, where the threat of lightning triggered the evacuation of the fan festival in Fort York.
There were jeers and groans as the announcement was made under blackening skies Thursday.
