Three cats killed, no other injuries in south Nanaimo house fire

NANAIMO — A morning house fire has claimed the life of three cats and badly damaged a south end home.

Calls to 9-1-1 came around 10:10 a.m. on Friday, May 1, regarding a home on Haliburton St. between Crace St. and Finlayson St. with smoke visible from the outside by neighbours and passersby.

Assistant chief of operations for Nanaimo Fire Rescue John MacKenzie said on scene the fire is believed to have originated from an upper-floor kitchen.

“On arrival, our crews encountered a house fully charged with smoke on the second floor. They made entry and knocked the fire down to the kitchen.”

While no one was home at the time of the fire, one cat was pulled from the home by firefighters and given emergency first aid, including oxygen, on the sidewalk.

The cat did not survive.

Two other cats were found inside after flames were extinguished.

All three cats belonged to a tenant of the property who had moved in just the day prior.

Nanaimo RCMP closed off Haliburton St., between Crace St. and Finlayson St. to allow space for first responders to work.

There’s no official word on what caused the fire, with investigators due on scene Friday or early next week to examine the scene.

Johnathon Vosburgh happened to be walking past the home at the time and was the first to call for help.

“I was just walking back…smelled the smoke and saw the smoke, walked a bit closer, and heard the alarm go off. [A neighbour] just happened to be outside, I asked if maybe there was a fire in the back. She said no and called the owner, I called 911.”

Fire Rescue said the home is not currently habitable due to extensive fire damage in the kitchen, and smoke damage elsewhere in the home.

Residents of the property are being supported through the City’s emergency services program.
