PARKSVILLE — A small wildfire in rural Oceanside is being held by responding crews.

The Coastal Fire Centre reports the Rowbotham Lake wildfire grew to two hectares in size after being discovered Sunday, April 26, burning around 10 kilometres southwest of Parksville.

Burning in a cutblock, a combination of a unit crew, along with initial attack firefighters, responded to the fire with aerial support.

Now classified as “being held” by the BC Wildfire Service, the boundaries of the fire are not expected to grow, and focus now turns to mopping up hotspots.

It’s the first notable wildfire on the mid-Island this fire season and comes during a period of heightened awareness from fire crews.

Julia Caranci, a fire information officer with the Coastal Fire Centre, told NanaimoNewsNOW on Friday, April 24, they were asking the public to be extra careful over the weekend and into the week.

An outflow pattern of weather is seeing dry winds come from the Mainland instead of more moist air from the Pacific Ocean.

Caranci said the pattern is dropping relative humidity and making fire starts more likely.

“We’re still in spring, and our indices have not reached the point where we need to consider any prohibitions at this time. However, when we do see a bit of a shift and change in conditions like we’re seeing right now, we just want to ensure that all of our partners and the public understand that there’s a little bit of a heightened risk right now, and we want people to be cautious before they light any fire.”

No buildings were threatened by the fire.
