Making Connections

Nanaimo Sports and Social Club going strong into its eighth year

NANAIMO — For the past eight years the Nanaimo Sports and Social Club (NSSC) has been offering adults a chance to play games and make connections in the community.

Organizers Chuck Hocker and Jamie Kuhn have seen the group grow a great deal since its early days.

“We’re regularly now offering four seasons of activities,” Hocker said. “We started off with one night a week of something, and now we’re offering three or four nights a week, we have something going on somewhere in Nanaimo.”

The very first sport to be played at NSSC was kickball, followed quickly by dodgeball.

There are many more options now.

“Jamie and I come up with what we want to do and offer. We do have about a dozen hosts who are running the different fields and gyms throughout the week. Now we have futsal, basketball and indoor and outdoor volleyball. We have three additional sports from where we started, and we’ve had some other smaller events offered for a limited amount of time.”

Volleyball has grown to be the number one sport at the NSSC, with both indoor and outdoor sessions.

“We’re running three seasons of indoor, and we’re running 32-38 teams regularly all year,” Hocker said. “Then we run our two seasons of outdoor. We have a four-on-four and a six-on-six night. Between the two, we’ll have typically between 40-44 different teams. In May and part of June, there’s three nights of volleyball between indoor and outdoor. If you added all those teams, there’s getting close to 90 different teams playing throughout the week.”

The NSSC has about 3000 members and is now in its spring season.

At any point throughout the year they have been 800-1000 people signed up.

Volleyball and dodgeball began in late March, basketball began in early April, and outdoor volleyball gets underway in May.

The other side of the NSSC is fellowship.

Hocker said that element is key for the participants who generally range in age from their early twenties to middle fifties.

“There’s a lot of teams that are meeting new friends and going out afterwards for food and drinks and having a chance to build new connections. We have a lot of people who are new to Nanaimo emailing us who are looking not just for a sport to play but a way to connect with people in the community.”
