NANAIMO — Following a co-ownership model when a landmark downtown hotel opened three years ago, Courtyard by Marriott Nanaimo is now wholly owned by Snuneymuxw First Nation’s economic arm.

Petroglyph Development Group (PDG) announced in a Tuesday, March 17 news release the acquisition of 100 per cent ownership of the nine-storey, 172-room Gordon St. Hotel.

The hotel was previously co-owned with Utah-based PEG Companies.

“PDG’s strategic acquisitions, which span hospitality, gaming and development, advance Snuneymuxw’s long-term vision of sustainable economic growth, self-determination and Nation-building, creating opportunities that benefit both Snuneymuxw people and the broader region,” PDG president Erralyn Joseph stated in the release.

Courtyard by Marriott Nanaimo currently employs 48 people, according to PDG.

SFN, via Petroglyph Development Corporation, has significantly expanded its business interests in recent years, most notably the acquisition of five casinos since 2024, including Casino Nanaimo located adjacent to Courtyard by Marriott Nanaimo.

Other casinos are located in Victoria and throughout the Lower Mainland.

Substantial property acquisitions by SFN includes nearly 200 acres of land near Nanaimo’s VIU campus, and the 6.6 acre old Howard Johnson Hotel site adjacent to the Millstone River.

SFN intends to develop both vacant lots, anticipated to be significant mixed use projects.
