NANAIMO  — The Clippers had a blistering start and went on to beat the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 5-1.

Sam Boisvert scored just over 30 seconds into the game and Nanaimo’s Hayden Fechner was stopped on a penalty shot before the contest was a minute old.

A pair of power play deflection goals by Charles Beland and Boisvert staked the Clippers to a 3-0 first period lead.

In the middle frame Miller Kay earned his first goal with Nanaimo and Harrison Boldt had a deflection tally to build the advantage to 5-0.

Former Clipper Kye Benoche broke the shutout bid of Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau with a tip in goal for the Bulldogs in the third.

Nanaimo finished 2/5 on the power play, killed off both penalties against them and outshot Alberni Valley 26-22.

All five Clipper goals were against starter Jack Hirshorn while backup Derik Brouillard stepped in for the last half of the night.

Nanaimo now leads Alberni by four points for second spot in the Coastal West division and the Clippers have a 3-2-1 record against their island rivals.

The Clippers honoured their alumni at the game and saw a large crowd of 1919 fill Frank Crane Arena.

Nanaimo wraps up the month of January with a home game versus the Coquitlam Express on Jan. 31.
