Clippers win in OT despite playing from behind against Surrey

SURREY — For much of the Clippers game against the Surrey Eagles it looked like the BCHL’s worst team may be poised to post an upset.

But Nanaimo gritted out a 4-3 overtime win even though they never played with the lead.

Surrey had an excellent first period and jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on goals by Lucas Di Giantommaso and Easton Jacobs.

Both of the Clippers top goal scorers, Hayden Fechner and Elliot Perreault, notched their 11^th goals of the season in the middle frame to even the game at 2-2.

Fechner’s tally was a one timer off of a Sam Boisvert pass and Perreault converted on a breakaway backhand after a blueline steal during a Clipper power play.

The Eagles took the lead thanks to an Owen Fitzgerald man advantage goal but Garin Ludwig was timely in getting his first goal of the season on a Nanaimo power play with four minutes left to play.

Tanner Bruender sniped the overtime winner into the top corner after taking a perfect pass from Landon Pappas.

Clippers backup goalie Dryden Riley outduelled new Surrey netminder Finn Marshall to earn the victory.

Nanaimo outshot Surrey 37-34 and went 2/7 on the man advantage and 5/6 on the penalty kill.

The Clippers head into the last week of November alone in second place in the BCHL’s Coastal West Division, seven points behind the first place Capitals and two points ahead of the third place Grizzlies.

Nanaimo will visit Alberni Valley on Nov. 28 and host Langley on Nov. 29.
