Where to pay tribute in Nanaimo & Oceanside this Remembrance Day

NANAIMO — Thousands of people throughout the vast mid-Island region will pay tribute to military personnel who served, and continue to serve, to protect the freedoms will often take for granted every day.

The City of Nanaimo, in partnership with local legions and numerous service groups, host a Remembrance Day service in downtown’s Dallas Square Cenotaph at 85 Church St.

Typically, in the range of five thousand people surround the square where the formal ceremony begins with a large parade procession at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11.

The event will be live streamed by NanaimoNewsNOW and available on our website, beginning around 10:30 a.m.

Road closures impacting portions of Commercial, Skinner, Chapel, Bastion, Church and Front streets will be in effect.

Annually, NanaimoNewsNOW compiles a list of Remembrance Day events hosted by local Royal Canadian Legions, all of which are open to the public.

Nanaimo- Dallas Square Park Cenotaph (85 Church St.)
10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. – Large parade procession forms behind St. Paul’s Anglican Church, proceeds up Church St. to Cenotaph.

10:50 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Canadian and American National Anthems.

11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Formal ceremony includes gun salute, cannon blast, Last Post, two minutes of silence, Royal Canadian Air Force fly-over, as well as fly-over of two Qualicum Beach-based vintage warplanes, wreath-laying.

Vancouver Island Military Museum (100 Cameron Rd) is open, free of charge, following the Remembrance Day ceremony

Nanaimo – Legion 256 (1630 East Wellington Rd.)
7:30 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. – Complimentary breakfast in the lounge (bacon, eggs, sausage & pancakes)

9 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Branch service in the hall, includes wreath-laying (shuttle service available to downtown ceremony)

10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – live telecast of downtown Nanaimo parade and ceremony

12 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Open house (bar open), beef on a bun courtesy Save-On-Foods, afternoon musical entertainment, socializing, food & drink available for purchase

Nanaimo – Legion 10 (129 Harewood Rd.)
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – live telecast of downtown Nanaimo parade and ceremony. Legion branch #10 will be open to the public between 10:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.

1:00 p.m. – 3 p.m. – complementary lunch served: clam chowder/beef barley soups and chili

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – complementary dinner served: beef dip courtesy Buy Low Foods. Musical entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.

Lantzville – Legion 257 (7225 Lantzville Rd.)
10:30 a.m. – Parade from the Legion to Huddlestone Park (Corner of Lantzville Rd. and Huddlestone Rd.

10:50 a.m. – Service begins at Huddlestone Park Cenotaph

12 p.m. – Hot dogs at Costin Hall for children, soup lunch at Legion.

5 p.m. – Roast beef dinner by donation at Legion.

All day- Entertainment at Legion.

Ladysmith – Legion 171 (621 1st Ave)
10:45 a.m. – 10:55 a.m.– March from Legion to the Rotary Memorial Peace Garden and Cenotaph at base of Warren St.

11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Service at Ladysmith Cenotaph, includes wreaths laid by local dignitaries.

12 p.m. – 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. – Social gathering at Legion: complimentary sandwiches and cookies served. Complementary rum and beer served as well.

Parksville – Legion 49 (146 Hirst Ave W)
10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. – Parade encircling Parksville City Hall, includes Oceanside Concert Band and a pipe band, concludes at Cenotaph (100 Jensen Ave. E, behind City Hall)

11:00 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. – Formal ceremony takes place, vintage warplane fly-over, wreath laying at Parksville Cenotaph.

Following ceremony, lunch at Legion Branch 49 will be supplied by Save-On-Foods around noon, while youth gather at neighbouring Salvation Army’s Mt Arrowsmith Church (187 Alberni Hwy) for hot dogs

11:30 a.m. until everybody leaves. – Parksville Legion is open for socializing, food and live entertainment.

Qualicum Beach – Legion 76 Qualicum Beach Civic Centre (747 Jones St)
10:00 a.m. – Doors open at Qualicum Beach Legion (180 Veterans Way)

10:30 a.m. – buses depart Legion for ceremony at Qualicum Beach Civic Centre (747 Jones St.)

11:00 a.m. – Remembrance Day service at Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.

1:00 p.m. – Doors open to the public at Qualicum Beach Legion

Bowser – Legion 211 (7035 Island Hwy. West)
10:30 a.m. – 10:40 a.m. – Parade from Magnolia Court to Legion Cenotaph

10:40 a.m. – Vintage warplane flyover

11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Remembrance Day ceremony commences. Towards the ceremony’s conclusion, doves will be released from a cage, which will then fly to the owner’s home.
