‘A tireless advocate for nature:’ Buttertubs viewing tower renamed to honour local conservationist

NANAIMO — The viewing tower at perhaps the most well-known marsh on Vancouver Island will be renamed to honour a local conservationist who dedicated much of his life to the area.

Bill Merilees spent more than 40 years helping to conserve and enhance all 55 hectares of Buttertubs Marsh, as founder and chair of the “Friends of Buttertubs,” according to a release from the City.

His efforts led to the creation of the 2.3-kilometre Buttertubs trail loop, the expansion of the marsh’s protected lands, and the addition of signage detailing the area’s significance and featured wildlife.

Merilees also played a big role in promoting Buttertubs, producing a printed nature guide and supporting research projects undertaken by Vancouver Island University students.

Along with refurbishing the Buttertubs Marsh tower for continued use, it is now officially renamed the “Bill Merilees Viewing Tower.”

City staff will work with the Nature Trust of BC to give the tower a makeover, including the installation of commemorative signage.

“Bill Merilees was a tireless advocate for nature and a true champion of conservation in Nanaimo,” said mayor Leonard Krog. “Renaming the viewing tower in his honour is a fitting tribute to a man whose vision and dedication helped shape Buttertubs Marsh into the ecological treasure it is today.”

Merilees passed away on June 18, shortly after a petition to name the viewing platform in his honour was done by community groups.
