Robo-call scam targeting Ladysmith residents

Jul 18, 2025 | 9:58 AM

LADYSMITH — A new version of an old scam is focused on local residents.

A release from the Town on Thursday, July 17 stated a series of robo-calls received recently by Ladysmith residents were “falsely claiming to be from Town staff”, and were believed to be discussing fibre internet connectivity.

Ladysmith, like all local municipalities, do not use auto-dialers, and do not have anything to do with internet connectivity for homes and businesses.

“Residents are urged to be cautious and not to share personal or financial information over the phone unless they can confirm the legitimacy of the caller,” the Town’s statement on the situation read.

The Town states they do not authorize or initiate the calls, and anyone who receives one should hang up and call City Hall at (250) 245-6400 to report the occurence.

Phone scams impersonating local governments is not a new issue.

The City of Nanaimo reported earlier this month scammers were calling people to ask for personal information, using a technique called ‘spoofing’ to make the caller ID appear as if it was from the City.

In July 2023, a similar situation was reported in Qualicum Beach.

Automatic dialing-announcing devices (ADAD), or robo-callers, are legal in Canada, but only under certain circumstances as outlined by the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

Telemarketers may use the devices for solicitation calls, “only if the consumer has given their express consent prior”, according to the CRTC.
