122-year-old temperature record broken in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Unseasonably hot conditions over the weekend have helped re-write the record book.

Data from Environment Canada shows Nanaimo set a new temperature record for June 8, with the mercury reaching 31.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday, beating the old record set back in 1903 of 30.6 degrees.

Records in Nanaimo date back to 1892.

Oceanside was also much hotter than normal, with the Qualicum Beach Airport recording a high of 29.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday, beating a 2024 record of 26.8 degrees.

Qualicum’s record book dates back to 1962.

Unsurprisingly, hot spots across B.C. were through the Interior.

Lytton reached 39.3 degrees, just ahead of Kamloops at 37 degrees, Cache Creek at 38.6 degrees and Pemberton at 36.7 degrees.

All broke records set back in 2023.

The only other record breaking area on Vancouver Island on Sunday was the Malahat, which saw a high of 28.8 degrees Celsius, beating a 1995 mark of 27.4.

The heat is expected to end Tuesday, June 10, with a return to more seasonable temperatures through the rest of the week.
