Thunder in the Valley returns to Alberni

The Thunder in the Valley drag races are ready to roar back to life.

An agreement with the City will restore the races to the former Somass Mill lands, according to Alberni Drag Racing Association President Roger Haggerty.

“We have to patch some holes where they were doing environmental testing, but that’s all easy stuff,” he said. “We’re going to be doing this like the full Thunder in the Valley event: we’re having a Friday night car show, we’re going to be doing a burnout contest and it’s just gonna be an Australia-style burnout contest so people aren’t just be sitting still they’ll be able to move around and do donuts and stuff, that should be pretty exciting, and the spectators are going to have a great seat on that.”

Haggerty said racers will be using a 330-foot track that runs from the water to the Industrial Road from August 8th to 10th

Organizers are hoping to fundraise and eventually build an 1/8 mile track somewhere in the Alberni Valley.
