QUALICUM BEACH — Eligible voters will make their opinions known during general referendum day to borrow up to $30 million to fund expanding the Oceanside region’s only public pool facility.

In-person voting takes place on Saturday, April 5 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at several Oceanside area voting locations linked here to potentially invest in Ravensong Aquatic Centre (RAC).

Preliminary results are expected to be released by the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Saturday night, while final results are scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.

A majority of approval is required to expand and modernize the 30-year-old indoor pool facility located beside the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre on Jones St.

Eligible voters in the Town of Qualicum Beach, City of Parksville, as well as electoral areas A,F,G and H can cast their ballot.

Multiple advance voting opportunities took place, while mail-in balloting expired on Thursday, April 3.

The proposed project features doubling the size of the RAC, including a new four lane, 25 metre pool for fitness and competition, leisure pool with play features, lazy river feature, improved steam room and sauna, new change rooms, lobby with seating/pool viewing, and multipurpose rooms.

As of last fall, the RDN estimated the RAC expansion project would cost $36.4 million.

A recent $7 million federal grant was announced under the Canada Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program to help absorb costs.

More information on proposed RAC upgrades and the referendum process are available here.
