Nanaimo Hudson’s Bay store to close amid nationwide liquidation

Apr 3, 2025 | 4:14 PM

NANAIMO — A longstanding anchor tenant at Vancouver Island’s largest shopping mall will soon be no more.

Liquidation sales are underway at Hudson’s Bay department stores across the country including the Woodgrove Centre location in north Nanaimo.

‘Store closing’ sale signs outfit entrances to the store, as well as throughout the interior.

An employee in the store said the location is expected to close sometime in June.

Woodgrove Centre, owned by Central Walk, was not in an immediate position to comment on the future of the Hudson’s Bay space when queried on Thursday, April 3.

The last day Hudson Bay Company (HBC) gift cards/certificates will be honoured at the store is April 6, according to signage outside the Nanaimo HBC location.

Returns with receipts for purchases made prior to March 25 will be honoured until April 6, after which no returns will be accepted.

HBC’s rewards program is also paused.

The company recently announced only six of its 88 stores would not be shut down following liquidation sales, with locations in Ontario and Quebec spared at this time.

HBC, which began as a fur trading business, was founded in 1670.

Nanaimo’s big box retail climate has drastically altered over the years, with outlets such as Zellers, Sears, Target and Future Shop all shutting down.
