NANAIMO — Untimely losses for a pair of local high school boys basketball teams proved costly over the weekend.

Both Dover Bay and Wellington Secondary schools earned semi-finals appearances in their respective divisions at the B.C. School Sports Basketball Provincial Championships, held in Langley and ending with the gold medal games on Saturday, March 8.

Dover Bay made it all the way to Saturday’s championship game after comfortably winning their previous three games by a combined 84 points, leading to a final matchup against Victoria’s Spectrum Community School, who beat Dover in Island Championships two weeks prior.

The Dolphins again fell short against their Island rivals, with Spectrum winning the gold 81-66, handing Dover a 4A silver medal, a year after the team had won gold at the 3A level.

Frank Linder led the way in the final offensively, scoring 31 points. Van Suiter at 15 and Joe Linder contributed 13 points.

Dover trailed by one point after the first quarter, 12 points at the half and by just five points after three-quarters.

Wellington, playing in 3A competition, were 2-0 heading into action on Friday, March 7, before losing by two points to Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Collegiate in their semi-final matchup.

It forced the Wildcats into a bronze medal game on Saturday against Courtenay’s Mark R. Isfeld Secondary, with the north Island school winning 76-71.

Grayson Ritzland and Brayden Savage had a vast majority of Wellington’s scoring as the Wildcats led by two points at the half and six points heading into the final quarter.

However Mark R. Isfeld outscored Wellington 29-16 in the final frame to secure the victory.

Nanaimo Christian placed 12th in the 1A division, going 1-3 through their four games on the provincial stage.
