High winds cancel evening sailings between Nanaimo and mainland

NANAIMO — Wind warnings in place for Vancouver Island have caused BC Ferries to cancel some sailings Monday evening.

Routes cancelled include the 8:45 p.m. sailing leaving Nanaimo’s Departure Bay into Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay, as well as the 8:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. from Duke Point to Tsawwassen are cancelled for Feb 24.

The 10:50 p.m. sailing out of Horseshoe Bay and the duplicate sailings out of Tsawwassen have also been cancelled due to the risk of high winds and waves in the Strait of Georgia, according to BC Ferries.

Environment Canada issued wind warnings Monday morning for the majority of Vancouver Island, saying gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour are expected overnight, easing by Tuesday morning.

Western Vancouver Island is expected to experience the highest winds Monday afternoon, with the coastal Mainland and east Vancouver Island expected to see gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour overnight.

Further ferry cancellations could result from the wind with travellers advised to check the BC Ferries website prior to heading out or follow their social media.
