Nanaimo Sport Achieve Awards seek nominations for 20th annual event

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards will celebrate a milestone 20th year.

Nominations opened in early December and will wrap up on Jan. 12.

The 2025 ceremony itself happens on Feb. 21 at the Coast Bastion Hotel.

With memorable performances at the Olympic level as well as national, provincial and island wide success stories, this installment of the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards will feature several high level nominees.

The awards recognize achievements from the 2024 calendar year with in a geographical zone that extends from Ladysmith to Lantzville.

There are 17 major awards which will celebrate the accomplishments of local athletes, teams, coach, officials or sport administrators.

Another two special awards not only honour the best in sport but are named after local heroes in the community.

The Michael Rhode Memorial Award is presented to an athlete, coach or volunteer who has given siginificant time, energy and commitment to sport.

The Steve Smith Memorial Award is for outstanding achievement and dedication to extreme sports.

Finalists and winners will be decided by a panel of judges from the Nanaimo media and area sports community.

Previous winners include Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg, CFL star Andrew Harris, wheelchair racer Michelle Stilwell, racewalker Olivia Lundman and golfer Shelly Stouffer.
