B.C. government cabinet named, Sheila Malcolmson returns to familiar role

VICTORIA — A freshly sworn-in cabinet features a few ministers retaining their former positions, along with an expected significant turnover.

B.C. lieutenant governor Janet Austin swore in the 27-member cabinet during a Monday, Nov. 18 ceremony at Government House in Victoria.

Nanaimo-Gabriola riding MLA Sheila Malcolmson retained her position as minister of social development and poverty reduction.

While not in cabinet, Nanaimo-Lantzville MLA George Anderson was rewarded with one of 14 parliamentary secretary positions overseeing transit. Anderson was also announced as nominee for deputy chair, committee of the whole.

Stephanie Higginson, Ladysmith-Oceanside MLA, will serve as the NDP caucus chair.

A notable shift in the composition of cabinet sees Mid Island Pacific Rim MLA Josie Osbourne assume the high-profile health ministry portfolio.

The public safety and solicitor general position went to Garry Begg, Brenda Bailey assumed the finance ministry role, Mike Farnworth is transportation and transit minister and government house leader, while Lisa Beare is education and child care minister.
