Mandatory waste separation bylaw coming into effect for RDN
NANAIMO — All commercial, institutional, industrial and multi-family home dwellers will soon be responsible for sorting and properly disposing of items they throw away.
The Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) new mandatory waste source separation bylaw comes into effect on Jan 1, 2025, requiring all of those who don’t have a curbside pickup to separate all of their garbage, recycling and organics.
Affected areas include all properties within the RDN, including electoral areas A-H, the District of Lantzville cities of Nanaimo and Parksville, and the Town of Qualicum Beach.
Residents will have a 6-month grace period after Jan. 1 to become compliant with the bylaw, and they’ll need to work with their waste hauler to determine the best way to get their refuse into the appropriate place.
