QUALICUM BEACH — Approval has been granted to rebuild a service station in Whiskey Creek where 2021 fire levelled the business.

Regional District of Nanaimo board of directors recently granted a development permit to Mid Island Co-op to construct a gas station and convenience store at 3702 Alberni Hwy.

A setback variance was approved for the gas station canopy portion of the site, which will also include a convenience store on the one-acre property near Redman Rd.

According to the RDN, the applicant will be required to block direct access from the Alberni Hwy., with concrete barriers to be installed.

Access to the service station will be provided via a paved shoulder connecting with adjoining Redman Rd.

The proposal includes a circular traffic pattern around the building which links to Redman Rd.

In mid June 2021 a van caught fire at the former Whiskey Creek Co-op, sending flames high into the air and destroying the business and closing Hwy. 4 in both directions for several hours.

The fire was determined by Coombs-Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department (CHVFD) to be accidental.

Nobody was injured in the fire, with CHVFD Lt. Theresa Benoit crediting fast-action by service station staff that

“Staff at the service station were quick-thinking and shut off the fuel pumps and got everyone evacuated from the building. There were no injuries to any staff or the public.”day,” Benoit told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Several vehicles were destroyed in the fire.
